PREPARATION
Begin with a clean, weed-free seedbed by spraying or tilling existing vegetation. Remove heavy residue and prepare a firm seedbed to maximize seed-to-soil contact.
SOIL TEST & FERTILITY
Conduct a soil test whenever possible and adjust soil pH to 6.0–7.0. Apply fertilizer according to soil test recommendations. For best performance, pair Brassicas + Bulbs™ with Backwoods Fuel™ Brassicas + Clover fertilizer.
PLANTING RATE
Broadcast (Prepared Seedbed): 10 lbs/acre
Broadcast (No-Till): 12 lbs/acre
Drill: 8 lbs/acre
PLANTING DEPTH
Plant ¼–½ inch deep. When broadcasting, lightly drag, rake, or cultipack after planting to improve seed-to-soil contact. Avoid planting deeper than ½ inch.
TIMING
Plant approximately 60–90 days before your area's average first frost, once soil temperatures have cooled below 70°F. This allows the forage and bulbs to fully develop before cold weather triggers peak attraction.
MOISTURE
Plant into adequate soil moisture or immediately before a soaking rainfall. Consistent moisture during establishment is essential for rapid germination and vigorous early growth.
ADJUSTING FOR PLS & GERMINATION
Recommended planting rates assume 100% Pure Live Seed (PLS) and 100% germination. Actual seed quality varies by lot. To determine an adjusted planting rate, divide the recommended seeding rate by the PLS percentage multiplied by the germination percentage, both expressed as decimals. Adjusting for PLS and germination helps ensure proper stand density, uniform establishment, and maximum late-season performance.

When should I plant Brassicas + Bulbs™?
Plant approximately 60–90 days before your area's average first frost, once soil temperatures have cooled below 70°F. This gives the forage time to establish and develop bulbs before cold weather triggers peak attraction.
Does Brassicas + Bulbs™ require a frost to work?
No. Deer will often begin browsing the leafy forage shortly after establishment. However, the blend reaches its peak performance after one or more frosts convert plant starches into sugars, making the forage noticeably sweeter and more attractive.
Will deer eat the bulbs?
Yes. As winter progresses and leafy forage becomes limited, deer commonly dig up and consume the energy-rich turnips, radishes, and sugar beets, extending attraction well into the late season.
Can I plant Brassicas + Bulbs™ by itself?
Absolutely. Brassicas + Bulbs™ performs exceptionally well as a standalone planting. It can also be used alongside cereal grains or other food plots to create a diverse hunting and nutrition program.
How much sunlight does it need?
Brassicas + Bulbs™ performs best in full sun, receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Heavy shade will reduce forage production and bulb development.
Do I need to fertilize it?
For maximum performance, yes. Brassicas are heavy nutrient users and respond extremely well to proper fertility. A soil test is always recommended, and Backwoods Fuel™ Brassicas + Clover fertilizer is formulated to help maximize forage production and bulb growth.
How long will the plot last?
In most areas, Brassicas + Bulbs™ provides attractive forage from early fall through late winter. Depending on browsing pressure and weather conditions, bulbs may continue providing food even after the leafy forage has been consumed.
Can I plant this every year?
Yes, but rotating with other food plot species is recommended to reduce disease pressure, improve soil health, and maintain
long-term productivity. Many land managers alternate Brassicas + Bulbs™ with cereal grains, legumes, or diverse annual blends like Genesis™.
