💡Pro Tip—Because Clover Deluxe™ contains several small-seeded clover varieties, planting too deep is the most common cause of poor establishment. Broadcast onto a firm seedbed and cultipack to ensure excellent seed-to-soil contact without burying the seed.

Common Mistakes

✗ Neglecting mowing and weed control

✗ Skipping soil test

✗ Allowing weeds to compete during establishment

✗ Applying too much nitrogen

✗ Planting too deep

✗ Skipping fertilizer

✗ Planting during hot, dry conditions

PREPARATION

Start with a clean, weed-free seedbed
by spraying or tilling existing vegetation. Create a firm seedbed with good
seed-to-soil contact to maximize germination and stand establishment.

SOIL TEST & FERTILITY

Conduct a soil test whenever possible
and adjust soil pH to 6.0–7.0. Apply fertilizer according to soil test
recommendations. For best results, use Backwoods Fuel™ Brassicas + Clover
fertilizer at planting to support healthy establishment and long-term clover
production.

PLANTING RATE

Broadcast (Prepared Seedbed): 12
lbs./acre
Broadcast (No-Till): 15 lbs./acre
Drill: 8 lbs./acre

PLANTING DEPTH

Plant ¼ inch deep or less. When broadcasting, lightly cultipack or roll the seed into the soil. Do not bury seed deeper than ¼ inch, as shallow placement is critical for successful establishment.

TIMING

Plant approximately 45–60 days before
your area's average first frost, once soil temperatures have cooled below 70°F.
This allows both the annual and perennial clovers to establish before winter dormancy and promotes vigorous growth the following spring.

MOISTURE

Plant into adequate soil moisture or
immediately before a soaking rainfall. Consistent moisture during establishment
promotes rapid germination, healthy root development, and a thicker, longer-lasting clover stand.

ADJUSTING FOR PLS & GERMINATION

Recommended planting rates assume 100% Pure Live Seed (PLS) and 100% germination. Actual seed quality varies by lot. To determine an adjusted planting rate, divide the recommended seeding rate by the PLS percentage multiplied by the germination percentage, both expressed as decimals. Adjusting for PLS and germination helps ensure proper stand density, vigorous establishment, and years of productive forage.

Know Before You Grow

How long will Clover Deluxe™ last?

With proper fertility, weed control, mowing, and moisture, the perennial ladino component can remain productive for
several years. The annual clovers provide strong first-year growth and may naturally reseed under favorable conditions.

Is Clover Deluxe™ an annual or perennial blend?

It is a combination of annual and
perennial clovers. White Cloud Crimson, Droptine™ Balansa, and Victory™ Arrowleaf provide strong annual production, while Everlast™ Ladino creates the long-term perennial foundation.

When should I plant Clover Deluxe™?

Plant approximately 45–60 days before
your area's average first frost, once temperatures begin cooling and dependable
moisture is available.

Can I frost-seed Clover Deluxe™?

Yes. Frost-seeding can help thicken thin stands or introduce additional clover into an existing plot. Success is best where competing vegetation is controlled and enough bare soil is exposed.

Does Clover Deluxe™ need nitrogen fertilizer?

Generally, no heavy nitrogen application is needed once the clovers are properly established and nodulated. Excess nitrogen can encourage grasses and weeds to outcompete the clover.

How much sunlight does Clover Deluxe™ need?

It performs best in full sun but can
tolerate partial sun. For maximum forage production and stand longevity, choose
a location receiving at least 4–6 hours of sunlight each day.

Will it handle heavy browsing?

Yes. The combination of clover species
provides strong regrowth and dependable forage under repeated deer use. Extremely small plots on high-density properties may still be overbrowsed before the stand fully establishes.

How often should I mow it?

Mow only when necessary to control
weeds or remove mature growth. Avoid scalping the stand, mowing during drought,
or cutting more than roughly one-third of the canopy at one time.

Can I plant Clover Deluxe™ by itself?

Yes. Clover Deluxe™ is designed as a
complete standalone clover blend. It can also be used to renovate existing perennial plots or blended at reduced rates with compatible forage species.

How much area does one bag cover?

One 5 lb bucket plants up to 2/5 acre at the recommended rate.

Why is my clover staying short?

Heavy browsing may be removing new
growth as quickly as it develops. Place a small exclusion cage in the plot to compare protected growth with the surrounding stand.

What is the most common planting mistake?

Planting too deeply. Clover seed should remain at or very near the soil surface and should not be buried deeper than ¼ inch.
