IS PEA PLUS™ THE RIGHT CHOICE?
What To Expect
See how PEA PLUS™ develops throughout the growing season.
7-14 Days
Rapid Emergence
Winter peas, rye, and radishes germinate quickly, creating fresh green growth that begins attracting deer almost immediately.
30 Days
Destination Plot
Lush pea growth and tender cereal grains create one of the most attractive food sources on the property as deer establish regular feeding patterns.
After First Frost
Peak Attraction
Cooler temperatures increase the palatability of the brassicas while winter peas continue providing highly preferred forage during the heart of hunting season.
Late Winter
Extended Performance
As winter progresses, rye and brassicas continue producing quality forage, helping extend food availability well beyond the early season.

PREPARATION
Begin with a clean, firm seedbed to promote even seed distribution and excellent seed-to-soil contact. Remove existing weeds and vegetation before planting. For no-till applications, terminate existing vegetation before planting.
SOIL TEST & FERTILITY
For best results, conduct a soil test and adjust soil pH to 6.0–7.0 as needed. Apply fertilizer according to soil test recommendations. For maximum establishment and season-long performance, pair Pea Plus™ with Fuel™ Cereal Grains, formulated specifically for cool-season food plots.
PLANTING RATE
Broadcast (Prepared Seedbed): 50 lbs/acre
Broadcast (No-Till): 60–65 lbs/acre
Drill: 40 lbs/acre
PLANTING DEPTH
Plant seed 1/2–1 inch deep when drilling or lightly incorporate to approximately ½–¾ inch when broadcasting. This depth provides an ideal balance for establishing the winter peas while allowing the rye, rape, and radish components to emerge successfully.
TIMING
Plant Pea Plus™ when soil temperatures decline to approximately 55–65°F, typically 45–60 days before your area's average first frost. This timing promotes rapid establishment, vigorous fall growth, and peak attraction throughout hunting season.
MOISTURE
Adequate soil moisture is essential for rapid germination and strong establishment. Plant just ahead of expected rainfall whenever possible and avoid planting into dry soil. Consistent moisture during emergence produces a thicker, more uniform stand.
ADJUSTING FOR PLS & GERMINATION
Recommended planting rates assume 100% Pure Live Seed (PLS) and 100% germination. Actual seed quality varies by lot. To determine an adjusted planting rate, divide the recommended seeding rate by the PLS percentage multiplied by the germination percentage (both expressed as decimals). Adjusting for PLS and germination helps ensure proper stand density and maximize food plot performance.

Know Before You Grow
Common Questions From Hunters
HOW LONG WILL PEA PLUS™ PRODUCE?
Pea Plus™ provides exceptional forage throughout the fall and winter growing season. Winter peas deliver outstanding early attraction, while rye and brassicas extend forage production well into late winter.
WHY ARE THERE TWO TYPES OF WINTER PEAS?
Austrian Winter Peas and White Flower Winter Peas complement one another by improving forage diversity, increasing attraction, and helping extend grazing throughout the season.
WHY IS RYE INCLUDED IN THE BLEND?
Elbon rye establishes quickly, withstands heavy grazing, improves cold-weather performance, and helps support the climbing growth habit of the winter peas while extending forage production.
WILL DEER OVER BROWSE PEA PLUS™?
Because winter peas are highly attractive, heavy deer populations can browse young plants aggressively. Larger food plots or multiple plantings are recommended where browse pressure is extremely high.
WHEN SHOULD I PLANT PEA PLUS™?
Plant when soil temperatures decline to approximately 55–65°F, typically 45–60 days before your area's average first frost, and when adequate soil moisture is available.
CAN I PLANT PEA PLUS™ EVERY YEAR?
Yes. Pea Plus™ is designed as an annual cool-season food plot and should be replanted each fall for maximum attraction and performance.
WHAT FERTILIZER SHOULD I USE?
For maximum establishment and season-long performance, pair Pea Plus™ with Backwoods Fuel™ Cereal Grains and follow soil test recommendations for future fertilizer applications.
WHAT IF WEEDS START TAKING OVER?
The best weed control starts before planting. Establish a clean seedbed, maintain proper fertility, and use appropriate pre-plant burndown herbicides. Once established, a vigorous stand helps compete with many weeds, but post-emergence herbicide options are limited due to the blend's diverse species.
